“Congratulations! You have been selected for a remote role paying $150 an hour. Just pay $299 for your equipment.” 🚩 If only all scams were this obvious. In 2026, many are not.
Common job scams we see
- Fake recruiter messages on WhatsApp, Telegram or LinkedIn using real company names
- Upfront payment requests for training, equipment or “visa processing”
- Task scams: paid “tasks” that later require you to deposit money
- Identity harvesting: requests for passport, licence or bank details before any real interview
- AI-generated interviews with no real person ever appearing
Red flags
- Offers without interviews
- Pay that is far above market for little experience
- Pressure to decide immediately
- Personal email addresses instead of company domains
- Any request for money. Legitimate recruiters never charge candidates.
How to check if a recruiter is real
- Look up the agency’s website and call the main number
- Check the recruiter’s LinkedIn history and connections
- Confirm the role exists on the company’s own careers page
- Search the company name plus “scam”
