Spotting Job Scams Targeting IT Job Seekers in 2026

“Congratulations! You have been selected for a remote role paying $150 an hour. Just pay $299 for your equipment.” 🚩 If only all scams were this obvious. In 2026, many are not.

Common job scams we see

  • Fake recruiter messages on WhatsApp, Telegram or LinkedIn using real company names
  • Upfront payment requests for training, equipment or “visa processing”
  • Task scams: paid “tasks” that later require you to deposit money
  • Identity harvesting: requests for passport, licence or bank details before any real interview
  • AI-generated interviews with no real person ever appearing

Red flags

  1. Offers without interviews
  2. Pay that is far above market for little experience
  3. Pressure to decide immediately
  4. Personal email addresses instead of company domains
  5. Any request for money. Legitimate recruiters never charge candidates.

How to check if a recruiter is real

  • Look up the agency’s website and call the main number
  • Check the recruiter’s LinkedIn history and connections
  • Confirm the role exists on the company’s own careers page
  • Search the company name plus “scam”

If you think you have been targeted

Stop communicating, do not send money or documents, and report it to Scamwatch. If you have shared bank or identity details, contact your bank and IDCARE straight away.
