If you work in SAP, the next few years look a bit like gold rush season. ⛏️ ECC mainstream maintenance ends at the end of 2027, extended support runs to 2030 at a premium, and Australian federal agencies alone have dozens of SAP instances to move. Demand for S/4HANA skills is heading in one direction.
The skills employers will pay most for
- S/4HANA conversion experience: real brownfield or bluefield projects, not just training
- Finance (FI/CO) with Universal Journal know-how
- Logistics (MM, SD, PP, EWM) with S/4 simplification items
- ABAP on HANA, CDS views and RAP for modern development
- SAP BTP, CPI and Integration Suite for the clean core approach
- Data migration with Migration Cockpit and data quality skills
- Fiori and UI5 for the user experience layer
- RISE with SAP and cloud Basis
How to position yourself
- Lead with outcomes on your CV: “Converted ECC to S/4HANA for 4,000 users, go-live on time”, not just a list of modules
- Get current certifications for your S/4HANA area
- Show the full life cycle: design, build, test, cutover and hypercare
- Learn the clean core story. Employers want people who reduce custom code, not add to it.
- Keep your LinkedIn sharp. SAP recruiters search by keywords like “S/4HANA”, “BTP” and “RISE”.
Contract or permanent?
Contract day rates for experienced S/4HANA people are strong while programs ramp up. Permanent roles suit those who want to own the system after go-live. Both paths are wide open. Our guide on permanent vs contract roles can help you decide.
