Moving from Permanent to Contract: Is It Right for You?

Contracting can look like the dream: higher rates, interesting projects and no performance review forms. 🌴 For many people it is. For others, the first gap between contracts is a rude awakening. Here is how to decide.

Contracting might suit you if

  • You have in-demand skills and a strong network
  • You enjoy variety and new environments
  • You are comfortable with some uncertainty
  • You have a financial buffer of at least three months
  • You want to focus on delivery rather than office politics

Permanent might suit you better if

  • You value stability, especially with a new mortgage at current interest rates
  • You want to lead people and grow a team
  • You want employer-funded training and career progression
  • Paid leave and parental leave matter right now

The money, honestly

Day rates are higher, but you carry the cost of leave, training, gaps and sometimes accounting. Work out your annual income at 80% utilisation rather than 100% for a realistic comparison.

How to make the switch smoothly

  1. Start with a PAYG contract through an agency
  2. Line up your second contract before the first ends
  3. Keep your network warm. Your next contract often comes from your last one.
  4. Keep learning, because your skills are your product now
