If your federal contract was not extended, you are not alone. 💼 With the government targeting around $4 billion in savings from reduced use of consultants and contractors, and converting thousands of contractor roles into APS positions, plenty of skilled IT contractors are facing the same question: what now?
The good news is that you have more options than it might feel like. Here is a practical guide.
First steps
- Check your end date and notice. Make sure you understand when your contract ends and whether any extension is possible.
- Ask for references from your agency manager and project leads while you are still there.
- Document achievements: what you delivered, with outcomes and numbers (without confidential details).
- Check your clearance status. Know your level and when it expires. It is a valuable asset.
- Review your finances and plan for a possible gap.
Option 1: Apply for the APS role
Some contractor roles are being converted to permanent APS positions. If you like the work and the agency, consider applying. Benefits include job security, paid leave, superannuation above the guarantee and career progression. The trade-off is usually a lower headline rate than contracting and a more structured process. Learn how APS selection works, especially writing to selection criteria.
Option 2: State and territory government
State governments are still running large digital programs in health, transport, education and justice. Many value experience with federal governance, security and large programs.
Option 3: Defence and clearance-required work
Holding a Baseline, NV1 or NV2 clearance is a real advantage. Defence and its industry partners continue to invest, and cleared people remain in short supply. See our guide to government and defence hiring.
Option 4: The private sector
Banks, insurers, utilities, universities and health providers value people who understand governance, compliance, security and large program delivery. The pace may be faster and the culture different. See moving from public to private sector.
Option 5: System integrators and consultancies
SIs need people who understand how agencies work, especially for outcome-based projects. A permanent consulting role can offer variety and stability.
Update your CV for a new audience
Government CVs are full of acronyms and process language. Translate them:
| Government language | Plain English |
|---|---|
| “Delivered EL1 brief to SES on program risks” | “Briefed senior executives on program risks and options” |
| “Supported MYEFO costing processes” | “Prepared cost estimates for budget decisions” |
| “Managed PGPA Act compliance for ICT procurement” | “Ensured technology purchases met legal and financial rules” |
Talk to recruiters early
Recruiters can tell you which sectors are hiring for your skills, what rates and salaries look like and how your experience will be viewed. Start conversations two to three months before your end date if you can.
A real-world example
A data analyst whose federal contract ended after three years had an NV1 clearance and strong Power BI skills. Within three weeks she had two options: a permanent APS role converting her old position, and a contract with a defence prime. She chose the defence role for the higher rate and new challenge.
Writing to APS selection criteria
If you apply for the converted APS role, you will often need a pitch or statement addressing selection criteria. Keep it specific and evidence-based. Use short examples with a situation, what you did and the result. Match the language of the Integrated Leadership System for your level, and keep within the word limit. Many contractors underestimate this step, so give it proper time.
Looking after yourself
A contract ending can feel unsettling, especially after years in one agency. Keep a routine, stay connected with former colleagues and remember that your skills and clearance are valuable. Most experienced contractors find their next role within weeks to a few months.

Clearances can remain active for a period and be transferred to a new sponsor. Check with AGSVA or your new employer.
