Government IT hiring has its own rulebook. Clearances, procurement panels, probity and a few acronyms that could fill a Scrabble bag. 🏛️ Here is a practical guide.
Security clearances in plain English
- Baseline: the most common level, for access to OFFICIAL: Sensitive and PROTECTED information
- NV1: access to SECRET information, common in defence and national security work
- NV2: access to TOP SECRET, a much smaller candidate pool
- PV: the highest level, rare and very specialised
Clearances are sponsored and processed through AGSVA, and can take weeks or months depending on level. Already cleared candidates are in high demand for exactly that reason.
Procurement panels
Most agencies hire contractors through approved panels such as the Digital Marketplace (BuyICT) and agency-specific arrangements. Suppliers must be on the right panel to submit candidates, and requests usually have short closing windows.
Typical timelines
- Request for quote released, often with 5 to 7 business days to respond
- Shortlisting and interviews
- Offer and security checks
- Start date, which can be delayed if a clearance must transfer or be upgraded
Big programs to watch
Federal agencies running SAP ECC now have until the end of 2030 after the DTA chose extended support, so S/4HANA, data, cyber and digital service programs will keep demand for cleared IT talent strong.
Tips for agencies and primes
- Check clearance status, level and expiry early
- Be specific about onsite days in Canberra versus other cities
- Work with a supplier who has a cleared talent pipeline, not just a panel number
