Backing Out of a Job Offer: The Real Cost to Your Reputation

You signed the offer, resigned, and then your manager said the magic words: “What would it take to keep you?” 💰 Suddenly you are tempted to back out. Before you do, think about the long game.

Australia’s IT market is small

Hiring managers move companies, recruiters talk, and the same names come up again and again. Backing out late can follow you longer than you expect, especially in niche areas like SAP, ServiceNow or cyber.

Why counteroffers often disappoint

  • The reasons you wanted to leave usually do not disappear with a pay rise
  • Your loyalty may now be quietly questioned
  • Many people who accept counteroffers end up leaving within a year anyway

Before you accept any offer, ask yourself

  1. Why am I really looking to move?
  2. Would I stay if my current employer matched the money?
  3. Have I told my recruiter about any other offers or doubts?
  4. Am I clear on salary, flexibility, title and start date in writing?

If the honest answer to question 2 is “yes”, talk to your current employer before you start interviewing seriously.

If you genuinely must back out

  • Do it as early as possible. Days matter.
  • Call, do not just email. A real conversation shows respect.
  • Be honest and brief about the reason.
  • Thank them for their time and the offer.
  • Tell your recruiter first. They can often help manage the conversation.

Handled well, you can keep the door open. Handled badly, you may find it closed for good.
