Contract or permanent? It is the “tabs or spaces” of IT hiring. Everyone has an opinion, and the right answer is usually “it depends”. So let us make “it depends” a bit more useful. 🤔
Choose a contractor when
- The work has an end date: a migration, an upgrade, a regulatory deadline
- You need someone fast: contractors can often start within one to two weeks
- The skill is niche or temporary: a data migration specialist for six months, not forever
- Budgets are uncertain: with rates at 4.85% in late 2026, flexibility is worth a lot
Choose permanent when
- The work is ongoing: platform ownership, architecture, product and team leadership
- Knowledge must stay in the building: systems, customers and culture
- You are building capability: growing juniors into seniors takes time
- Total cost over two or more years matters: permanent is usually cheaper long term
The hidden costs on both sides
Contractors: agency margin, knowledge walking out the door, and onboarding again if extensions fall through. Watch for percentage markups that grow every time the rate does.
Permanent: recruitment fees, super, leave, equipment, and the very real cost of a hire who leaves in the first six months. A short warranty does not protect you much.
The blended model most teams end up with
A permanent core (owner, architect, lead engineer) plus contractors for peaks. When the project ends, the contractors roll off and the knowledge stays with the core.
Run your own numbers
Our cost check calculator compares your current contract or permanent costs with working with Zone, including our 6 month replacement warranty on permanent placements and a low fixed daily margin on contractors.
