Day Rates Explained: What IT Contractors Earn in 2026

“$1,000 a day? I am going to be rich!” says every first-time contractor, right before the first quiet month. 😅 Day rates look big, so here is how to read them properly.

What drives your day rate

  • Skill scarcity: SAP S/4HANA, cleared cyber, ServiceNow and senior architects command premiums
  • Seniority and track record
  • Location and onsite requirements: Canberra cleared roles often pay more
  • Contract length: shorter or urgent contracts can pay more per day
  • Industry: banking and government programs often pay at the higher end

Comparing day rate with salary

A quick rule of thumb: divide a permanent salary by about 200 to 220 working days, then remember contractors usually do not get paid leave, sick leave or employer-funded training. A day rate that looks 40% higher may only be modestly better once gaps between contracts are included.

“Plus super” or “including super”?

Always check. For PAYG contractors the difference matters, and it can be worth several thousand dollars a year.

How to negotiate a better rate

  1. Know the market for your exact skill set, not a generic “developer”
  2. Talk outcomes: “I delivered the same migration twice” is worth more than years of experience
  3. Be flexible on terms, for example a longer contract for a slightly lower rate
  4. Ask about extensions and rate reviews upfront
  5. Use a recruiter who knows the market, and who is transparent about margin
