Welcome to Australia! 🦘 You have the skills, the experience and possibly a jacket that is far too warm for Brisbane. Now you want that first local IT role. Here is how to get there faster.
1. Make your resume Australian
- Two to four pages, achievements first
- No photo, date of birth or marital status
- Explain overseas companies in a line (“one of India’s largest banks, 50,000 staff”)
- Show your work rights clearly near the top
2. Tackle “no local experience”
- Contract roles are often easier first steps
- Volunteering or community tech projects show local references
- Local certifications (AWS, Azure, ServiceNow, Salesforce, SAP) speak a universal language
- Meetups and user groups build your network quickly
3. Prepare for Australian interviews
- Expect behavioural questions. Use the STAR method.
- Interviews are often conversational. Ask questions back.
- Show how you work in teams, not just what you know
4. Network, network, network
Many Australian roles are filled through referrals. Reach out to former colleagues already here, alumni groups and recruiters who specialise in your area.
5. Be ready to move quickly
Have your documents, references and work rights evidence ready, so you can accept fast when the right offer comes.
